Electric Bicyclist Killed In Early-Morning Crash On US 90 In St. Mary Parish

FRANKLIN, Louisiana (LAAN 54) — A 42-year-old man from Patterson was killed early Wednesday morning after an electric bicycle and a pickup truck collided on U.S. Highway 90 in St. Mary Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating the fatal crash shortly before 1 a.m. on October 14 near Alice C Road.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2000 Ford F-350 pulling a gooseneck trailer was traveling eastbound in the highway’s outside lane. At the same time, the bicyclist was traveling eastbound along the fog line.

For reasons that remain under investigation, the truck struck the electric bicyclist. The man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and was dressed in dark clothing. Investigators have not determined whether the electric bicycle had lighting equipment.

The pickup truck driver was properly restrained and reported no injuries. Authorities said the driver was not suspected of impairment and provided a breath sample that measured 0.000 grams percent. A routine toxicology sample was collected from the bicyclist and submitted for analysis.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Louisiana State Police remind cyclists that bicycles are considered vehicles under state law and riders must follow applicable traffic laws. Officials also emphasize the importance of reflective clothing, proper lighting and visibility when riding at night or in low-light conditions.
