Parents Encouraged To Help Children Navigate Political Content On Social Media

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (LAAN 54) — Political commentary is increasingly accessible through livestreams, short videos and reposted clips, creating new challenges for parents seeking to help children understand what they see online.

Emily Washburn, an issues analyst and writer for the Daily Citizen at Focus on the Family, discussed political commentator Hasan Piker during a conversation about online influence, political ideology and youth media literacy.

Washburn described Piker as a prominent left-wing political voice and expressed concerns about his rhetoric and political positions. She also criticized the Democratic Socialists of America and discussed her interpretation of democratic socialism. These were Washburn’s assessments, and the conversation did not independently substantiate every allegation or characterization.

A central theme was how young people encounter political messages outside their original context. A livestream segment may be shortened, reposted or presented by another account, potentially exposing viewers to comments without the surrounding discussion.

Washburn encouraged parents to account for children’s maturity and to teach them how to think critically about political messages. She emphasized explaining political terms and historical context instead of relying only on labels.

For Louisiana families, the discussion offers a broader reminder that digital media literacy involves more than limiting screen time. Young people can benefit from learning to identify opinions, question unsupported claims and consider the context behind a persuasive message.

As online personalities influence political conversations, parents and educators face the continuing task of helping young people evaluate information responsibly.
